Tank Paint is original factory black metallic flake rough with flaking paint and some rust, though the decals have been sun faded and especially the eagle looks rough. It has a trident top sissy bar that I know is from that era as well, but also unsure if that is stock.I think probably not. I'm pretty sure it does have the stock grips on it, though the right side throttle grip is cracking and will need to be repaired or replaced (most likely). It also has highway pegs that seem period appropriate installed but I doubt those are stock either. So it may not be original, but it is period appropriate. I have seen it on a few of these Bicentennial Edition bikes, but have also seen another seat that more resembles other stock Sportster seats from that era. The seat that is on it is from the same era, but I'm not sure if it's original.
It starts right up and runs great, sounds great, just like a Harley should. The motor has not been rebuilt, as it hasn't even been properly broken in yet. I cannot verify that the mileage on the bike is truly 6K but my guess is it is because of condition and the possibility of the original tires. The title will read EXEMPT from mileage because of age. The bike has been on a short reliability run and the engine, clutch and transmission all work and sound as they should. The gauges clear covers are faded and discolored and one is cracked. The tank is in very good condition with one or two chips and the inside is very clean. The tires are rot and both fenders have a lot of chips as you can see in the pictures. It can be used as it sits as the brakes work as well as the tach and odometer work. The tires are rot and the shocks will need to be rebuilt. If kept original and ridden daily it will need some attention. The bike can be enjoyed as is or is a great candidate for a restoration. Outside of those two missing items this bike is original. It is missing the insert for the air cleaner and I do believe the front lower tree should have a XLCH emblem.
Look at the pictures, I have looked the bike over and compared it to other "original" bikes and I think this is the real deal original. They are Continentals and if not original then they are period correct. It is the original paint, seat, exhaust, grips, pegs and more. This bike was purchased at an estate auction from a collection. 1976 HARLEY DAVIDSON AMF XLCH 1000 This is a completely unmolested original Sportster.
